I love how Herbie's expression of ETERNAL GRATITUDE is his normal stolid face. The bicycle pump sequence @ the end is classic.

Also: Have you come across anything in your reading about Herbie~ if Ogden Whitney based the character on Bill Gaines, by any chance ? He really looks like a preppy version of EC's Editor & Chief~!

I've never heard much about the origin of Herbie's look other than the Alan Moore interview I featured in http://jeffoverturf.blogspot.com/2010/09/herbie-popnecker-cover-model.html where the rumor is that Herbie apparently looked like a young Ogden Whitney.

Yes, that stoneface of Herbie's is a key to the comedy...nothing shakes him...like Buster Keaton, he's unflappable.
