Here from "Mad" the COMIC BOOK #6 1953 is John Severin and Harvey Kurtzman's "Melvin of the Apes!", the sequel to their own "Melvin!" back in "Mad" the COMIC BOOK issue #2.
Geez Severin is good. I am a fan of his under-rated stuff.

Even though these are static images they're more lively than the animated cartoons I see on tv now.
Severin is an over-looked master, to be sure.
In comic books of yore as with key animation of yore, they understood that the single panel/single cel frame was NOT just a "get from 1 to b" pose but THE single MOST funny/dramatic/actioned/whatever pose that could be. Comics and animation today are filled with in-betweeners trying to learn a directors job by the numbers and blaming their short-comings on budget.
I'm as guilty of boring frames as any of them, probably because of years of unconscious influence. Maybe that's why we blog, to bring the cream back to the top?
Jeff: I've always thought this stuff is, by far, Severin's best work.
