Opening the issue was a spoof of Sherlock Holmes by Kurtzman and the fantabulous Bill/Will "Chicken Fat" Elder, hisself. Remember, anyone who reads an Elder story just once is cheating himself...the nooks and crannies are filled with all sorts of comic genius. Read on and enjoy!

What is the point of Dr. Whatsit's business with the cigarette in the panel where Shomes is rewinding the automaton?
hurm...not clear on what that was. I seem to remember cigarette commercials maybe doing a graphic where the cig is peeled down like that to show all of the "pure tobacco goodness" inside, but the gag here seems to be such a passing quick thing, I'm not sure if that's it or not.
