While preparing to begin this blog of views inside my head, something happened that I would have liked to comment on. On July 3rd, Sam Butera passed away in Las Vegas. Sam was the rollicking sax player, arranger and band leader behind Luis Prima and Keely Smith. He laid down some of "The Wildest" music to ever come blaring out of The Sahara Hotel in Vegas or off the vinyl played on the hi-fi's of basement rumpus room cocktail parties in the 50's and 60's. From "That Old Black Magic" to "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody" to "I Wanna Be Like You" from the soundtrack of Walt Disney's "The Jungle Book", Sam swung a lot of great tunes and hung a lot of great memories.
Thanks Sam!
Now to my first post.
Today would have been Dean Martin's 92nd birthday. From Jerry Lewis' partner in the 50's to solo nightclub performer to member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack to movie star to TV variety show host and Roast-Master, Dino made a lot of smiles. At Hollywood's Magic Castle they have the bar used on the set of Dean's TV show and I once took the time to imbibe in a cocktail and a toast to him there. There was no punchline written on the swizzle stick, but I did full on believe that "Everybody Love's Somebody Sometime". Happy birthday Dean. Don't let the moon hit you in the eye like a big pizza pie.
What's new pussycat? It's Tom Jones' 69th birthday. The guy so cheesy he's cool. The original sock crotch stuffer is also the guy who helped kick back the alien invasion in Mars Attacks and his version of Prince's "Kiss" with The Art of Noise is wayyyyyyyyyy hipper than The Purple One's dated one. Speak of the devil, it's his/her birthday too. It's 51.
Ken Osmond is 66 today. If this isn't an American icon, I don't know what is...I mean, who hasn't known at least one "Eddie Haskell" in their lives? I've known them all my life. In school and all through my adult work and social life. We can't blame Ken though, these gnats breed on their own.
Thanks for seeing what's in my head today. Come take another peek soon
