30 Year Old Cool Posters from my Closet!

Some 30+ years ago, as the comics direct market was a-dawning, publishers fouund they could sell their properties in forms other than comic books and have an outlet all ready for it.

Some of my favorite mainstream comics of that era were the Wolfman/Perez "The New Teen Titans", John Byrne's turn at "The Fantastic Four", Keith Giffen's work on "The Legion of Super-Heroes" and Frank Miller's "Daredevil".

I got all these bitchin', boss, cool posters about then.

Marvel pissed Miller off by bringing Elektra back to life or I'll bet we would have goten one of those, too.  :)

San Diego Countdown Cartoons - 4th and final!

It's almost here.  The excitements, the disappointments, the crowds, the toys, cartoons and comics!

Comic-Con actually begins TONIGHT with a special preview set of programs, I don't begin my fun until tomorrow morning though, still one more day of work between me and geek-nirvana.

Here's the final 6 days of my 22 day countdown to Comic-con that I've been posting (and perplexing all my non-geek friends with) over on Facebook.  I'm reposting "Day 16" here because it sets off a running gag through days 17 and 18.

As wordy as I can get, I kind of enjoyed doing these little one-panel bits.

Ooooooooooooh, one...more..sleep...it's going to be worse than the night before Christmas.

I'll report back to you all the drama and comedy that happens in San Diego when I return.  Until then I've pre-loaded a few blog posts that I hope you'll enjoy.   Until then...

Talk to you soon.

The Avengers Meet the Sub-Mariner!

Ah, the Mighty Marvel Universe gets bigger and smaller with every passing issue!

One of the great things about (the early days especially) the Marvel Universe that Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko were creating, was the continuity that was being introduced in the books.  Not just from book to book, but from character to character.  As big and dynamic as the heroes and stories were, they all appeared as part of a bigger-still world than the one they dominated!

Enough of that...we're trying to build up to the premiere of "The Avengers" movie tomorrow!  So in wanton anticipation, here's "The Avengers" issue #3 from 1963.  The Hulk resigned from the team last issue and has now joined forces with Prince Namor, The Sub-Mariner to return and combat our erstwhile team of Thor, Iron Man, Giant-Man and The Wasp.

It's shirts VS. skins the Marvel Age way!

This is pure fun in the way only Stan and Jack could do it!

Talk to you soon!

Jack "King" Kirby: "The King of the Comics"

Jack Kirby was born in 1917, he would have been 92 today.

Jack Kirby was easily the most dynamic, possibly the most prolific, definitely the most influential artist in comic book history.

He created or co-created Captain America, The Newsboy Legion and The Shield in the 1940's and helped popularize The Manhunter and Sandman.

Through the late 1940's through the 1950's he worked on science fiction comics, western comics and even invented the romance comic.

Then in the 1960's he created or co-created The Fantastic Four (reviving The Human Torch and Sub-Mariner on the way), Thor, Iron Man, The X-Men, The Inhumans, The Hulk, The Avengers (bringing back his own Captain America), Ant-Man and the Wasp, The Black Panther, The Silver Surfer, and basically set the Marvel Style of comics for everyone else to follow.

In the 1070's he moved over to DC and set Jimmy Olsen on his ear and created The Demon before creating his "Fourth World". The New Gods, The Forever People and Mister Miracle.

Jacks work was bigger than life, and I believe I'll let it speak for itself.

Lest those horrible movies with Jessica Alba leave a dark spot on his reputation and a sick taste in your mouths from their sheer atrociousness, here's the first issue of "Fantastic Four" from 1961. Enjoy.

As always, click the thumbnails for full size.

And if any of you at "Marvel Entertainment" think this copyright infringement. Sue yourselves first for fucking up this comic over the last 35 years since Jack left.

Thanks Jack! Rest in peace...you worked hard.
