Uncle Jeffy's Sketchbook! - 8-3-12

Last peek at my sketchbook for the week.  I flipped back to the beginning (from before I put it away, not getting how sketchbooks work, probably back in 2008-9)

I think my concept here on page 1, was to make the sketchbook an anthropological notebook written in the 1920's and 30's by the worlds dumbest explorer.  See here the hilarity as he discovers an elephant (not knowing that they'd already been discovered) and miscategorizes it as an insect.  Hilarity ensues?

Then I think I got the concept of doing a strip featuring EVERY comic and cartoon character EVER created.  Not thinking about the logistical nightmare of telling an understandable story with 8 million characters, I just thought it would be cool to see.  I kind of did that any way (and will again) with my "A 'Slight' History of Golden Age Comic Book Super Heroes" thingy I do here from time to time.

Here's me attempting (and liking) my take on the Duck's (Donald and Daffy) and then being thwarted by that dang hard-to-draw-for-me-anyway, Mickey Mouse.

My horrible Mickey meeting Daffy Duck, Superman and Ko-Ko the Clown at what ever event I imagined them all meeting at.  Batman and The Yellow Kid look on.

You see, I'd never really drawn other peoples characters before.  I have always (from a very young age) known that it's the cartoonists style that makes the feature cool, the character comes second.  Jack Cole's Plastic Man is awesome.  Joe Staton (who is extremely talented in his own rigth) doing Plastic Man was a bad take on a character and missed the point.  So at 45-6 years old, I was trying to see if I could even draw them, and have them be recognized.

Here's a sketch of me looking bad-ass with my posse:  Goofy, Donald, Mickey, A horrible Bugs Bunny, the Golden Age Green Lantern and being evesdropped on by a very Bob Clampett-y Tweety Pie and a sloppy Sylvester.  Over all a decent Mickey there.

Which brings us back to the present as I doodle myself some more.

Sketching trying to find a new avatar for facebook and Twitter and the like.

Not the way Van Gogh spent his time...but I am a cartoonist...and that's a wonderful thing.

Thanks for sifting through this with me this week.

San Diego Countdown part 2!

6 more days have passed in my Facebook page cartoons counting down the days until San Diego ComicCon International 2012!

We're all a-twitter here about it.  The schedule for events on Thursday were formally announced yesterday, and without even seeing the next 3 days of events, I know that Unca Jeffy is gonna be one tired boy!

Some were confused by this one, thinking I was hoping to meet Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and the 2 Chris's from the movie...no no no...I want to meet the ACTUAL Avengers.

And likewise...I'm not mad at Green Lantern...I'm mad at the movie makers.

3 grades of Hollywood's takes on super-heroes.  Good, Bad and WTF!!!!  Luckily Superman can handle a gut shot now and then.  I'm just confused on why we have to "reboot" Spider-Man 5 minutes after the first 3 came out.  And...Peter Parker's parents??????????? in 50 years of the comic?  Never heard of 'em!

My wave at the Twilight gang for my boss' boss.  I almost had my balloon mentioning "True Blood", but then I found out that they were two different things.  Again, who knew?

Star Trek, Star Wars and all thingies outer-spacey...a geeks dream.

I miss my Harvey comics.  That's all there is to it.  Casper the friendly ghost, Spooky the tuff little ghost, Richie Rich the poor little rich boy, Hot Stuff the good little devil, Big Baby Huey and the rest.  No I didn't forget Stumbo the Giant, the cartoon was just too small.

Did I mention, I'm excited?

"Woman Wonder!" - Bill Elder - "Mad Mondays"!

"Mad" the COMIC BOOK #10 from 1954 comes to a close today, not by winding down, but by banging us over the head with another comic book parody which soon became a classic, Bill Elder and Harvey Kurtman's take on Wonder Woman "Woman Wonder!"!

This one's chock full of Elder's "chicken fat", chock full of Kurtzman's take on the medium itself (which keep in mind, was only 16 years old at the time) and even has Batman as the villain and a cameo by SuperDuperMan!!

It's a good'n...dig in...enjoy!

"Bat Boy and Rubin!" - Wally Wood - Mad Mondays!

In the annals of "Classic Mad Tales", here's one that stands out as a classic amongst classics. "Mad" the COMIC BOOK issue #8 from late 1953 contains none other than Wally Wood and Harvey Kurtzman's take on that iconc giant (even in 1953 I would think), Batman and Robin in...

..."Bat Boy and Rubin!"

Enjoy!

"I Rail Against Mankind and the Ecomomy" - 2010 "Best" of My Blog

More of some examples of some of my favorite blog postings from the past year.

As we all struggle with a down-turned Economy, I blame the shortcomings and short-sightedness of the human race. As I rage, rage, rage against the dying of the light, Superman struggles to comprehend the "big picture".

From January 27th, 28th, 29th, 31st and Febrary 1st, 2010...

Continuing on my path to becoming the world's wordiest cartoonist...not to mention the most copyright-infringiest...part 3 of Superman and my discussion on the changing world economy from down at The Drink Hole: oh yeah...click images to enlarge to readable size.

Superman continues to lack foresight while Batman and Iron Man set bad examples:

Ahhhhh...justice is blind...and she works at the Drink Hole!

Jeff continues to convince Superman of his faith in humans to overcome their own troubles...

...but the humans let him down.

Oh well..there WILL BE a next time!
