Wally Wood - The Mad Cartoonists - part 8

1953 and "Mad" the comic book issue #4 gives us a real treat. A story I've read from different levels for all my 47 years. Wally Wood spoofing another genre he was a master at, the super-hero. This also hits on DC Comics' penchant for suing everyone in a union suit for ripping off Superman.

We get it all here kids, Wally Wood, Superman and Captain Marvel...it don't get much better than this.

Wally Wood - The Mad Cartoonists - part 7

Wally Wood's contribution to "Mad" the comic book #3 from 1953 was with Harvey Kurtzman's spoof of the horror genre, "V-Vampires!".

I said it in the comments last week and I'll say it again...Wood's Women are HOT! I said this as comparison to Jack Davis' are hot, too...and as I delve further into these issues for the upcoming Bill Elder posts I find...Hell, "Mad" women are hot!

Wally Wood - The Mad Cartoonists - part 6

"Mad", the comic book #2 from 1952 had Wally Wood continue to spoof the sci-fi stories he was already doing for EC comics.

Resting on his laurels? Who cares! Wood doing sci-fi as humor OR adventure is something to behold. In fact...people like me are still talking about it almost 60 years later.

Mad the comic book #1 and Harvey Kurtzman brought on board EC's most fanciful sci-fi artist, and allowed him to be funny.

I never met a Wally Wood drawing I didn't like. Enjoy!

From the Yeller Kid to Yellow Journalism

Getting back to "Sunday Funnies" and wondering what to tackle first now that I've posted all the "Nemo: the Classic Comics Library" I have on hand, I'm going through a stack of magazines and scanning all I've got until inspiration strikes me.

Here's an issue of "Civilization", a magazine published by The Library of Congress, from 1995 discussing the advent of "Yellow Journalism" and the origin of it's name.

This was always a favorite subject of mine in school as it was actually a time when my teachers would talk about comic strips. :)
