A daily almanac of events and people I admire and appreciate. All things, and the people who did things, that were WORTH DOING! Songs and Cartoons and near-insane ramblings by me, too.

More Banjo Pigs!
More pigs and their banjos. See previous post for why...maybe we'll learn together.
Them good ol' Osborne Bros and the real "Rocky Top"
And Sonny Osborne teaches all us little piggies how!
As you are no doubt aware, Rocky Top is the official "fight" song of the University of Tennessee...and because my sister Debbie's husband is a Vandy alum, it is much despised in their household.
Now -- I don't have a dog in that fight. I just love the song and the Osborne Brothers. One day, when my niece was about four years old, I was playing the Osborne's version on my computer and singing it to her. My sister hears this from the other room and shrieks: "Don't let my husband catch you teaching my daughter that!"
In a related Rocky Top story, when my best friend from high school got married her mother threw her a surprise reception and the band she had hired had to skip out on the gig. The last-minute replacement knew only two songs--Rocky Top and I forget the other. So she's showing me a videotape of the reception and it gets to the point where I mute the sound on the TV. "But you're missing all the funny comments," she wailed. "If I hear those clowns mangle Rocky Top one more time I'm gonna do an Elvis-vs.-Robert Goulet number on that set," I shouted back.
Thanks for the info Ivan...I didn't know about the fight song thing. Sports of any kind are generally not on my radar.
I do however relate to the TV being threatened for hearing someone mangling the song...many's a time I've been offended by some hack mangling a piece of great music.
And back to story number two...good for you for covertly teaching your niece that great songs transcend all mookish football trivia! Here's to guiding the children. :P
