"Sane!" - John Severin - Mad Mondays!

Mmmmmm, "Mad Monday" back on Monday. Feels good!

And for it's valiant return, Mad THE COMIC BOOK #10 from 1954 hits you with a dose of John Severin flexing his western comic muscles in Harvey Kurtzman's parody of the Alan Ladd classic film "Shane" with a story called "Sane!".

It's gooooooooooood stuff...enjoy!

"Bop Jokes!" - John Severin - Mad Mondays!

Mad Monday is here again, kiddoes!

"Mad" THE COMIC BOOK from 1954 continues onward with Harvey Kurtzman and the underrated John Severin's take on slang of the day with "Bop Jokes!".

As with all humor that's this linked with it's time, a lot of the jokes are dated, but that shouldn't keep you from enjoying Severin's great characters, layouts and timing.

Enjoy!

This little gem from 1954 couldn't help but remind me of a similar take on modern language from animation legend Tex Avery and a little theatrical short he did for MGM in 1951. I'm not saying Kurtzman lifted the idea, I think it's just the post-war folks becoming more self aware and humor taking a more self-effacing turn.

You can decide.

"Treasure Island" - John Severin - Mad Mondays!

It seems the first half of "Mad" the comic book #7 from 1953 had a distinct literary flavor. First up was Harvey Kurtzman and Bill Elder's take on Sherlock Holmes and next up comes Kurtzman and John Severin's take on that grand adventure tale "Treasure Island". The wonderful thing about parody, their Mad-ist title for this little story is..."Treasure Island".

Love that cameo by their jungle hero "Melvin" on the splash page.

Enjoy!

Oh, by the by. Today is my second anniversary doing this blog and emptying the contents of my head. I still don't know what I'm doing here, but I sure am having fun. A big thank you to all the regular readers and to those who just stop by now and then. Especially to all the commentors, that really makes it fun for me.

"Melvin of the Apes" - John Severin "Mad Mondays"!

It was only a matter of time that the boys at "Mad" the COMIC BOOK widened their scope of parodies of all manner of pop culture icons to include the sequel!

Here from "Mad" the COMIC BOOK #6 1953 is John Severin and Harvey Kurtzman's "Melvin of the Apes!", the sequel to their own "Melvin!" back in "Mad" the COMIC BOOK issue #2.

Geez Severin is good. I am a fan of his under-rated stuff.

Enjoy!

"Miltie of the Mounties" - Mad Mondays!

Mountie adventure stories go way back. From Renfru of the Mounties to Sgt. Preston of the Yukon to the lampooning of Dudley Do-Right. Somewhere in the middle of this long tradition lies Harvey Kurtzman and John Severin's "Miltie of the Mounties!" from "Mad" the comic book issue #5 from 1953.

"Mad Monday" marches on. Enjoy!

John Severin - The Mad Cartoonists - part 16

Who's your favorite portrayer of "Robin Hood"? Douglas Fairbanks? Errol Flynn? Richard Green? Russell Crow?

Who's your favorite buffoon-like parody of "Robin Hood"? Daffy Duck? Dick Gautier? Clay Elwes? Kevin Costner?

"Mad" the comic book #4 in 1953 brought us this version by John Severin and Harvey Kurtzman. I like their's...Enjoy!

That brings to a finish my sharing of the first 4 issues of "Mad" the comic book and the examination of the four cartoonists to make it happen. This was all before my time and this helped me organize my thoughts of "Mad" and it's progentitors.

Plus I dug the hell out of it.

More "Mad" coming soon me-thinks.

John Severin - The Mad Cartoonists - part 15

Is the French Foreign Legion still asub-genre of adventure or romance stories? It was in 1953 when the third issue of "Mad" the comic book came out, and Harvey Kurtzman and John Severin took it on.

John is really good, you know that? I am really becoming quite a fan...only 58 years late.

John Severin - The Mad Cartoonists - part 14

John Severin hits "Mad" the comic book #3 from 1952 with Harvey Kurtzman's "Melvin!".

If you'll notice, this is the first "Mad" satire which picks a topic outside the walls of EC Comics. While Jack Davis ("Lone Stanger!"), Wally Wood ("Superduperman!") and Bill Elder ("Dragged Net!", "Shadow!") would get to do them over the next 2 issues, Severin got to do the first needling of a genuine pop-culture icon. And do it right, he did.

By 1952, Tarzan had already been on the American landscape for nearly half a century. Movies (both silent and talkie), serials (both silent and talkie, again), magazines, pulp novels, comic strips, comic books, radio, soon to be television and even kicking off it's own genre of adventure stories with countless immitators of jungle man, woman and boy stories popping up everywhere. This was a broad target, and maybe Kurtzman's foot-in-the-water of this kind of stuff. When there's so many imitators out there already, he could easily avoid copyright violation.

Who's to say it's Tarzan he's mocking and not one of a dozen other white ape men?

I do.

Enjoy!

Beautiful stuff!
