Nemo number 18 - 2 of 2

The Sunday Funnies are a little late in the day...but nothing shall stop their appointed rounds!

Part two of my posting of Nemo #18 continued from Sunday last, the back pages of this issue prove once again, that Nemo HAD no filler - just chock full of good, hearty comics strip nutrition!

First up, "Penmen of the Past" hits on the great Winsor McCay and some of his editorial cartooning work. Any fan of "Little Nemo" or his animation work, will be dazzled to see this work, as will anyone else.

Enjoy!

Next up is a review of those comic strips at the top of the famous strips in golden age Sunday papers.

Back when cartoonists had an entire tabloid page to work their talents, editors with an eye on value (even back then there were pinheads with spreadsheets trying to milk the last penny out of every nickel) asked the artists to produce second strips to ride atop their flagship titles.

Some grand stuff here by Rube Goldberg, Billy DeBeck, E.C. Segar, Chic Young, Harold grey and a passle of others.

Read on!

Continuing Nemo's serialized autobiography of Allen Saunders, here's more "Playwright for Paper Actors".

Very good reading!

Nemo hands us more reprints of "Sam's Strip", the insiders comic strip...

...and letters, Nemo gets letters...

I hope you all have a happy read about some of somic strip history's shining gems. There's plenty more where that came from!

Talk to you soon.

Mid-Week Sunday Funnies - MORE Nemo 14

More catching up with last weeks backlog of "Nemo: the Classic Comics Library"...I'll wrap it up tomorrow and be all caught up!

This section I dedicate to my buddy Marco Torre. You know, the frequent commenter to this blog, the guy who saved me from certain suicide when he repaired my ailing external hard drive and who's sometimes featured here in cartoon form as "The Mysterious Shadowy Figure" and representative of a rogue faction of "The Illuminati" who tried to "whack" me until I was saved by Willie Nelson (wow...my blog is more complicated than it seems...but then it IS everything inside my head).

This issue featured, not really a sad eulogy, but a fond remembrance of the work of the then recently departed Virgil "VIP" Partch. Link here to Marco's website devoted to his father Peter and the restaurant he co-founded, the Newport Beach staple "Charlie's Chili" and read about VIP's link to that home-grown establishment.

Than read what Nemo had to say. :)

Then Nemo gets back to Allen Saunders serialized autobiography, "Playwright for Paper Actors" part 7...good reading!

And finally today, a couple more pages of "Sam's Strip", the insider-strip by Jerry Dumas and Mort Walker...

The wrap-up to come tomorrow kiddies with lots more good stuff!

Talk to you soon!

Sunday Funnies: "Nemo" issue #10 - Christmas in July!

"Nemo: the Classic Comics Library" issue#10, their Christmas 1994 issue.

Robert ("All I Need to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten") Fulghum, in one of his essay books of the 1980's, had a chapter about finding a box of unopened Christmas cards in the middle of the summer and how much true joy he got from laying on his hammock in the backyard and sipping lemonade and feeling the Yuletide in the summer sun. There's no expiration date or statute of limitation on these things, folks. Go ahead and appreciate them anytime!

This issue starts out with a great selection of largely unseen Christmas cards from famous cartoonists to their friends and family. Real treasures!

That's pretty much where the Christmas theme stops. But it's a nice change of pace here on July 18th if you ask me.

Next, again Nemo interviews a contemporary cartoonist. Mel Lazarus of "Miss Peach" and "Momma" fame.

"Fantasy in the Comics" hits on the complex art stylings of Gustave Verbeek and his strip "The Upside Downs". Make sure you download these images so you can rotate them in your image viewer or else you'll miss half the fun.

Nemo uses it's far reaching expertise to expose us all to some artists from Europe that we're not often exposed to and the influence they have.

Bill Blackbeard looks back at the time in 1952 when Bud Fisher reviewed his own work from 30 years earlier in an introspective "Mutt and Jeff" sequence. Unique and insightful.

Part 6 of the Allen Saunders autobiography, "Playwrite for Paper Actors", offers more insider info from this long term comics professional.

And "Penman from the Past" celebrates the work of the great Ray Ewer. Drink it ALL in...is it ever worth it!

Finally a sneak peek at what's upcoming in "Nemo" issue #11...

...which I will be happy to bring to you next Sunday! Happy reading and...

Talk to you soon.
